Tens of millions of Americans rely on Social Security and Medicare and have paid into our social insurance system during their working lives. Yet, at a time when growing number of Americans are retiring every day and counting on their earned benefits for a secure and healthy retirement, all too often these programs are targeted with deep cuts and radical reforms in order to balance the budget.

That’s why I urge you to reject the status quo that for too long has landed Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block every time tough budget decisions must be made in Washington. Instead, I urge you to support legislative efforts to boost earned benefits and improve access to quality and affordable health care in America.

I fully understand that our country faces soaring national debt, caused in part by the first Trump Administration-GOP tax law that mainly benefits the wealthy and huge corporations. Our budget deficit is likely to only grow if these tax cuts are extended next year. However, Americans’ retirement and health security should not be sacrificed in order to pay down debt they did not cause in the first place. Rather than cutting benefits to pay for other fiscal priorities, I request that you consider ways to strengthen Social Security and Medicare.
