Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and his allies in the 115^th Congress (2017-2018) are rapidly pursuing a devastating agenda for Medicare that includes:

Repealing the Affordable Care Act that would weaken Medicare, gut Medicaid, charge older adults five times more for insurance than younger adults and force millions of Americans to lose their affordable health care coverage;

Ending traditional Medicare by privatizing it for the benefit of big insurance companies, which will make it difficult for seniors to keep their doctor and shift massive health care costs onto beneficiaries; and

Raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67, which would amount to a benefit cut for millions of Americans.

As someone relying on Medicare now or in the near future, you must insist that the promise of Medicare be upheld by our government. That’s why the National Committee — as one of the largest, most effective advocacy groups in the nation fighting to defend Medicare — is conducting a nationwide petition campaign to stop momentum in Congress for devastating cuts and dangerous privatization schemes targeting this vital program. Already we’ve delivered more than one million petitions to Capitol Hill demanding that Congress keep its “Hands Off Medicare,” but we must keep the pressure on lawmakers!

This movement in Washington to gut a crucial social insurance programs amounts to nothing less than a war on people at all levels of income and employment who are counting on health security in their retirement. As your constituent, I’m deeply concerned about the growing momentum in Washington to destroy traditional Medicare and shift more health care costs onto Medicare beneficiaries, especially at a time when growing numbers of Americans are counting on Medicare to provide them with comprehensive, affordable health care in retirement.

I believe it’s patently unfair to continue blaming Medicare beneficiaries and the Medicare program for the problems in our nation’s health care system. Instead of supporting common-sense solutions to reining in health care costs system-wide, Congress continues to push higher health care costs onto those who are least able to afford them. All the while many lawmakers defend the interests of massive pharmaceutical companies and wealthy insurance corporations who continue to inflate health care prices to increase their bottom line.

As my member of Congress, you have an obligation to reject proposals that would weaken — even destroy — traditional Medicare, including: higher premiums and co-pays, making it harder for beneficiaries to choose their own doctors and ending traditional Medicare through privatization.

If you understood the real impact of these drastic changes on Americans, especially those who live on fixed incomes, I truly believe you would work to protect and strengthen — not destroy — Medicare.
