Today, after decades of disappearing pensions, shrinking savings and stagnant wages, millions of Americans are counting on their earned benefits for the majority of their income in retirement. And our children and grandchildren will inevitably need Social Security more than ever when they reach retirement age.

Historic deficits and the Trump-GOP tax law are being used by some as an excuse to push unfair Social Security cuts. Yet, this program that millions of hard-working Americans have paid into their entire working lives should not be sacrificed to solve our nation’s debt crisis, to pay for tax breaks for the very wealthy or to fund completely unrelated programs. Instead, Social Security should be strengthened to meet the needs of current and future beneficiaries.
