TELL CONGRESS: Older Americans Need a Fair COLA Every Year!

Next year, seniors will receive a 3.2% Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), much lower than this year’s 8.7% COLA. And it means that millions of older Americans will continue to struggle to afford the rising cost of housing, food and prescription drugs. Seniors depending on Social Security for the majority of their income in retirement need a COLA that keeps up with the rising costs of the goods and services they rely on.

Next year’s scant 3.2% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) will be quickly eaten up by rising out-of-pocket health care costs, housing expenses, and food costs.

The current COLA formula does not go far enough toward paying the bills because it fails to calculate the true impact of inflation on seniors’ wallets. It especially under-represents the rising costs that retirees pay for expenses like health care, prescription drugs, food, and housing. Yet, the annual COLA is critically important to millions of Americans who need it just to maintain their standard of living and stay above the poverty line.

That’s why I urge you to cosponsor the “Fair COLA for Seniors Act” (H.R. 716), a bill that requires the use of the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly and will ensure benefits for retirees are not diminished by rising costs in goods and services that seniors disproportionately rely on.
